The bizarre use of colour in the painting is an emotive counterpoint to the reassuring detail of crowds of people found in the middle ground of the picture.

Shadow areas would normally appear to be predominantly cold blue in this part of the world but I decided to paint the foreground shadows in hot red and orange to hint at the idea of the band playing a touch of Salsa on a hot summer evening.
